With the 2008 season finally underway, UND is looking good despite a conference record of 0-2. UND opened their season in the Upper Midwest Lacrosse League on February 8th against the number two nationally recognized St. Johns University. UND managed to break out and score first against a highly respected team in their division. "We fought hard for every one of our goals and have made many improvements since our first season in the UMLL last year." UND played well in the second half of the game and made one specific accomplishment worth noting. They out-scored St. Johns in the third quarter. "Our defense is looking good and we have a couple new long-stick mid-fielders that are really stepping up." End score was a staggering 5-17 in favor of St. Johns. The next day UND played St. Thomas at Augburg College in Minneapolis, MN. St. Thomas came out very physical and UND accumulated almost a whole quarter's worth of penalty time. That left St. Thomas with plenty of e.m.o. time and room to create wholes their defensive end. St. Thomas was also ranked nationally in a pre-season poll at number 5. There are just over 100 teams in Division II of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). St. Thomas and St. Johns are running a very tight race in hopes for the National MCLA Division II Tournament held in Texas on May 14th."We played hard and are still working on developing this team. We are really still in our infancy." It would appear that UND's schedule should be getting easier after playing two teams ranked in the top five of Division II, but that is not the case. UND will be taking it on the road for all five of their games in March. Four of their five games will be played at the University of Oklahoma, home of the Sooners. UND will play three teams that are well respected in Division I; University of Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and University of Nebraska. They are hoping that continuing to play top teams in both Divisions I and II will prove to prime the team for the rest of their season against teams in the UMLL. Watch for UND to gain momentum as the season unfolds. |
